Anna Harper is a young woman who grew up in an orphanage and struggles financially while working as a waitress and violinist. After unexpectedly losing both jobs, she accepts a large sum of money to participate in a dangerous six-month psychological experiment conducted by Dr. Amber Clark.
Dr. Clark is determined to prove that past lives exist. Using medication, hypnosis, and specialized equipment, she attempts to access memories and experiences from the previous lives of her volunteers.
Anna enters the laboratory believing she has found a way to solve her financial problems. She soon discovers that the facility is very different from what she expected. Most of the volunteers are people with little money and few, if any, people waiting for them outside. The laboratory imposes strict rules, and breaking them results in financial penalties. Because most volunteers cannot afford to pay those penalties, they are forced to remain in the facility longer, allowing the laboratory to conduct additional experiments on them.
Anna becomes close to Georgiana, another volunteer who repeatedly breaks the rules and accumulates penalties. Despite the oppressive environment, the two develop a deep friendship.
During one of the experiments, Anna experiences an extraordinarily vivid vision. She looks into a mirror but does not see herself. Instead, she sees another woman — Elizabeth, a professional ballerina. Anna experiences the scene through Elizabeth’s eyes: she sings, moves gracefully, and performs ballet movements before suddenly turning toward a man approaching her with his arms open. The man is Alfonso Rodriguez. Anna wakes from the experiment convinced that she has encountered a memory from a previous life.

Elizabeth is a professional ballerina and the wife of Alfonso Rodriguez, a wealthy and powerful Spanish businessman who has recently inherited his father’s fortune. Alfonso’s father had been deeply involved with Don Mateo Vargas, one of the most powerful mafia figures in Spain, using the Rodriguez transportation company to facilitate their operations. Alfonso, however, refuses to continue his father’s criminal legacy.
Despite his determination to distance himself from the mafia, Alfonso is an intensely possessive husband. He loves Elizabeth obsessively and attempts to prevent her from dancing publicly because he does not want her exposed to the public — especially to the dangerous world surrounding the Spanish mafia.
Alfonso is both deeply loving and frighteningly violent. When Don Mateo sends Frederick to threaten Alfonso into continuing his father’s business, Alfonso refuses to submit. Instead, he brutally cuts off four of Frederick’s fingers, leaving only the middle finger intact as his answer to Don Mateo.
Among Don Mateo’s men is William, Alfonso’s childhood friend. Unknown to the others, William is actually an undercover police officer working to bring down Don Mateo’s criminal network. When William realizes that Don Mateo intends to target Alfonso, he secretly warns him during a charity event. That night, William encounters Elizabeth for the first time without knowing who she is. Before recognizing her as Alfonso’s wife, he sees her dancing alone on the rooftop of the event venue. He is immediately captivated by her.
William helps save Alfonso and Elizabeth when Don Mateo’s men attack the event. William is injured during the escape. Knowing that Don Mateo will likely kill William for betraying him, Alfonso offers him a new position: his personal bodyguard and, more importantly, Elizabeth’s protector. The decision brings William closer to Elizabeth — and unknowingly places the three characters at the center of a tragic love triangle.
As William becomes increasingly trusted by Alfonso, he also falls increasingly in love with Elizabeth. Elizabeth, meanwhile, begins drifting away from Alfonso. Her half-sister Catalina lives with the couple and gradually manipulates Elizabeth through subtle influence. Catalina has secretly been in love with Alfonso for years and deliberately works to destroy his marriage.
Elizabeth begins developing feelings for William. While Alfonso becomes increasingly obsessed with keeping Elizabeth, his psychological state deteriorates. His violence toward her grows worse, while his conflict with Don Mateo escalates. William is trapped between three forces: the police pressure him to provide evidence against Alfonso, Alfonso increasingly trusts him with his life, and Elizabeth is becoming the woman he loves.
Eventually, after witnessing Alfonso’s violence toward Elizabeth, William decides that he and Elizabeth must escape together. Before leaving, however, William returns to Don Mateo and kills him. With Catalina’s help, William and Elizabeth disappear.

Anna eventually sees Alfonso on television in a documentary about powerful and influential Spanish businessmen. She recognizes him instantly. He is the same man she saw during her experiments.
Anna and Georgiana begin researching Alfonso’s past and discover that decades earlier he had been married to Elizabeth, who died in a car accident only a few months before Anna was born.
Anna becomes convinced that she was Elizabeth in a previous life. Only one month remains before Anna and Georgiana are supposed to leave the laboratory and begin their lives outside. They dream of finally being free. But Georgiana dies during an experiment as a result of the drugs administered by the laboratory. Anna blames the laboratory for her friend’s death.
Her grief transforms her original curiosity into a mission. She wants to find Alfonso, tell him what she has discovered, and convince him to use his influence to shut down the laboratory. Anna eventually escapes and travels to Spain. After a difficult search, she finds Alfonso.
To Anna’s surprise, he believes her story. Their relationship quickly develops into an intense emotional and romantic connection. Yet the closer Anna gets to Alfonso, the more disturbing Elizabeth’s past becomes.
Catalina is still living with Alfonso and maintains an extraordinary influence over him. She constantly unsettles Anna, while Anna begins discovering contradictions in the story she believed about her previous life.
Anna finds Elizabeth’s old diary. Half of its pages have been torn out. The surviving pages make one thing increasingly clear: Elizabeth had not been happy in her marriage to Alfonso. But Anna still does not know that Elizabeth had fallen in love with another man. Alfonso also refuses to discuss Elizabeth or William, although he has never removed their photographs from his desk. Then the police arrive at Alfonso’s mansion with a piece of gold jewelry. Alfonso identifies it as belonging to his late wife.
The police reveal that it was found inside the pocket of the remains of a body recently discovered. The remains belong to William, a former police officer who disappeared years earlier. Forensic evidence shows that William was murdered by repeated blows to the skull and body before being buried. Alfonso claims that William disappeared years ago after stealing Elizabeth’s jewelry. Anna begins to suspect that Alfonso is hiding something far darker.

After discovering that Elizabeth has left him for his best friend, Alfonso suffers a psychological collapse. He refuses to tell anyone that Elizabeth has abandoned him. He tells everyone that she has simply gone away and will return. Only Catalina knows the truth.
Catalina continues pretending to be Alfonso’s loyal friend. Driven by her love for Alfonso, Catalina decides to reveal their location to him. She goes to a masked ballet performance, knowing Elizabeth has always dreamed of dancing without Alfonso’s control. Catalina recognizes her among the dancers and follows Elizabeth and William afterward. She discovers their hiding place.

Anna investigates Catalina’s past and eventually learns from one of Alfonso and Elizabeth’s former servants that Catalina had been in love with Alfonso for years and deliberately poisoned Elizabeth’s marriage.
When confronted, Catalina disappears, leaving behind a letter confessing her actions. She reveals that she secretly put birth-control pills into Elizabeth’s drinks without her knowledge. She also admits that William never stole Elizabeth’s jewelry. Catalina gave the jewelry to one of Alfonso’s servants in exchange for his silence because the servant knew what she had done.
As Anna and Alfonso’s relationship deepens, Anna asks him to help shut down Dr. Clark’s laboratory. Alfonso uses his wealth, influence, and lawyer to bring the experiment to an end. Believing they have finally escaped the secrets of the past, Anna and Alfonso decide to marry.

On the day of Anna and Alfonso’s wedding, Catalina returns. She finds Anna and reveals the devastating truth. Catalina tells Anna that Elizabeth never loved Alfonso as Anna had believed. Elizabeth had fallen in love with William, escaped with him, and had a child.
Elizabeth was never Anna’s reincarnation. Anna was Elizabeth’s daughter.
Anna is devastated. She realizes that the memories she experienced during Dr. Clark’s experiments had been completely misunderstood. The drugs used during the experiments had heightened her neurological activity, causing deeply buried childhood memories to surface in distorted and fragmented forms. What Anna believed were memories of Elizabeth’s previous life were actually fragments of her own childhood — memories experienced through the eyes of a little girl who watched her mother through a mirror. Anna tries to escape the wedding.
But at the last moment, she confronts Alfonso and demands that he tell her the truth. Alfonso finally confesses.
1999. Alfonso finally finds Elizabeth and William. He arrives at their hiding place with his men. Inside the house, he hears Elizabeth singing. He follows the sound upstairs and sees her standing in front of a mirror, holding a baby girl in her arms.
Elizabeth turns and sees him. Alfonso approaches her. He embraces and kisses her while Elizabeth begs him to take her and their daughter if he must — but to leave William alive.
William arrives moments later. Alfonso’s men seize him downstairs and beat him. William is eventually killed on Alfonso’s orders. Alfonso takes the baby, Anna, from Elizabeth. He intends to use their daughter to force Elizabeth to return to him. Elizabeth runs after him.
Trapped between William’s dead body and the loss of her daughter, she cannot allow Alfonso to take Anna away. She gets into her car and pursues him at high speed. Before she can reach him, Elizabeth dies in a car accident.
After Elizabeth’s death, Alfonso is left with Anna — the last living connection to the love between Elizabeth and William. Consumed by grief, jealousy, obsession, and his desire to erase everything that reminds him of the life Elizabeth chose with another man, Alfonso falsifies Anna’s legal age and sends her to an orphanage. He deliberately severs her connection to her real family and buries her true identity.

Alfonso admits that he knew from the beginning who Anna really was. He had always known that she was Elizabeth’s daughter. But Anna’s resemblance to Elizabeth made it impossible for him to reveal the truth. He became emotionally attached to Anna because he saw Elizabeth in her, and he could not bring himself to tell her who she truly was.
He also admits that he killed Anna’s father, William, and that Elizabeth died in the car accident while trying to take her daughter back. Alfonso begs Anna for forgiveness. He tells her that, despite everything he has done, he cannot bear to lose her.
Before Anna can decide whether she can forgive him, Catalina shoots Alfonso and kills him. Catalina is immediately killed by one of Alfonso’s men. Before his death, Alfonso leaves his entire fortune to Anna. Anna is finally free from the secrets that have controlled her life.
She inherits Alfonso’s wealth, but the inheritance means far less to her than the truth she has finally uncovered about her identity, her parents, and the people whose choices shaped her life before she was old enough to understand them.
Anna chooses to keep the love she once felt for Alfonso in her heart, despite the terrible truth about his actions. She buries Alfonso beside Elizabeth’s grave. Then, using her inheritance, Anna establishes an orphanage on the former site of the laboratory and names it after Georgiana — turning the place where vulnerable people were exploited into a place where children without families can finally have one.
Anna has finally discovered who she is.
But the truth about her past has changed everything she once believed about love, family, forgiveness, and herself.
